A Case Study

Sometime back, a long-time customer of our website services referred the owners of Key West Finest to our firm. The two ladies, mother and daughter, had supported themselves by publishing "rack brochures" for many years. Realizing that the Internet had become a major source of destination news, the pair had used a local web design firm to build them a site that would display the same advertisers found in their print brochures.

Unfortunately, that website was poorly implemented and inadequately promoted. While the ladies had great ideas on what the website needed to accomplish, they were at a loss as to why their goals were not being met. Their friend (our customer) recommended us to 1) review their current website, and 2) provide some recommendations to increase viewership.

We were contacted and charged with more than making mere suggestions. The ladies, having been disappointed once by a web design firm, demanded "metrics", not just opinions. We offered our services (for a fee), they agreed, and we began gathering statistics from various sources.

Not to "give away the farm", we looked at rankings and traffic, comparing their site to sites that catered to the same marketplace, sites that appeared prominently in the search engine rankings (for various keywords/keyphrases), and sites that exhibited significant traffic.

Given those metrics, the ladies decided to employ us for a complete re-design which included 1) search engine optimization as an integral component of the design, 2) a companion blog, 3) articles, 4) videos, 5) social networking, and 6) most recently, mobile sites: a web-based site http://www.keywestfinest.mobi/ which appears in a smartphone's browser window and an iPhone app .

Yes, we got the job. Using the items just listed, and with their guidance and help, together we raised their Google Pagerank by 200% and the website traffic by 500%. But of more importance, return on investment is now such that both ladies are satisfied that they made the right decision in moving from a print-only medium to a combination of print and web advertising. And, even with the downturn in the travel industry, their revenue from ad sales has remained stable.
